Jen Hellow is a dear friend of mine who passed away unexpectedly at age 39 in February 2022. In the weeks after her passing, I moved through the stages of grief. My unbridled rage and sorrow produced many works that gave me hope. I felt like I could communicate with Jen while I was painting, as if we were having a conversation through color and texture and gold leaf and plaster. I created a series of pieces that are a reflection of many conversations with Jen after she had crossed the Great Threshold. I felt as if I was keeping her company on her journey to the other side, and in return, she was showing me that it isn’t what we think it is. It is truly a journey, not an ending.
